Welcome!
Thanks for reading Through the Weeds, a publication of the Cannabis Policy Lab.
Every other week, we break down a different cannabis policy topic: what it is, why it’s important, and any background that you need to know to understand it.
We’ll talk about things like cannabis extraction, air quality control in consumption lounges, and why it’s so hard to study cannabis. We’ll also highlight some of the best approaches to cannabis regulation and propose new ways of thinking.
Have a topic you’d like us to examine? Send us your suggestions.
About the writer
My name is Christina Dempsey, and I’m a former cannabis regulator. I worked in California cannabis for nearly six years, including as the state department’s first Policy & Research Director.
Working in cannabis regulation is unlike any other government job. Most government agencies have spent decades overseeing whatever it is that they regulate. There’s experience, case law, science and, typically, some federal standards to rely on.
In cannabis, everyone is learning as they go – and the learning curve is steep.
Much of my work over those six years was advising on government approach to cannabis and educating others (peers, leaders, and the public) about those policies.
My favorite part of my job was learning and debating the best path forward. Now that I’ve stepped out of public service, I want to pass on what I’ve learned to others.

What is the Cannabis Policy Lab?
The Cannabis Policy Lab publishes fact-based information written by cannabis experts about cannabis. We also help governments across the globe develop cannabis regulatory programs and understand changes in cannabis policy.

Our work is rooted in evidence and expertise. We research, ask questions and draw on our experience as former regulators. We avoid bias. We do not make product recommendations, and we do not take funding from cannabis businesses.
